It was with sadness that I read of the death of Peter Davy who, as a senior member of the team in the Westmorland Education Service, brought enthusiasm and humanity to all he engaged with.
There were those who were surprised that I pressed hard for his inclusion in those to be interviewed for the headship of Longlands Boys School.
He had, some said, no university degree; to which I replied that neither did the Senior Advisor to Westmorland Schools who was outstandingly successful.
I am glad to say Peter Davy knew me as the only Director of Education in England who had taught in a Secondary Modern School, where the great majority of the nation's children were educated.
I often quoted his success and attend as proof that the education process requires wisdom, not just academic excellence.
