A FLOOD-damaged Kendal bridge which has led to traffic congestion since its closure has re-opened.

Cumbria County Council said checks took place on Tuesday on Victoria Bridge which revealed work on repairing it had been successful.

Divers had been busy placing bags of grout beneath the scoured base as well as putting rock armour around the base to protect it.

The bridge had been closed to westbound traffic since January 6 after erosion was found under the bridge pillar on the upstream side.

It was closed to all traffic completely on January 13.

It had hoped to reopen late last month but was pushed back due to rising river levels and ‘technical problems’ at the plant supplying the materials.

A signed diversion via Parkside Road, Sedbergh Road and Sandylands Road was in place.
