SOLAR panels proposed for Selside's water treatment works could save around 50 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, says United Utilities.
The company hopes to install 476 roof-mounted panels to help power the Watchgate Water Treatment Works by generating 117MWh electricity per year.
The renewable energy would be used entirely at the Selside works, and the panels would take four weeks to install, according to planning documents with South Lakeland District Council.
The potential for glare has been analysed, with experts concluding it would not be harmful to human health.
