RETIRED actress Margaret Barton, who played tea room waitress Beryl in the film Brief Encounter, has celebrated her 90th birthday.
John Adams, manager of Carnforth Station Heritage Centre, was among the well-wishers to congratulate Margaret, who lives in Dorset where she is better known by her married name, Mrs James.
John said that, apart from a 'wonky' knee, Margaret is keeping well. She asked him to pass on her 'very best wishes' to everyone at the railway station, where scenes from David Lean's black-and-white classic romance were filmed in 1945.
Margaret is the last surviving member of Brief Encounter's main cast. She opened Carnforth Station Heritage Centre in 2003 and has kept in close touch ever since.
In the much-loved film, Carnforth doubled as the fictional Milford Junction, and its refreshment rooms were recreated on a set in Buckinghamshire.
