A SPECIAL flag is flying above Kendal Town Hall to support Armed Forces Day this Saturday, June 25.

The flag was hoisted by South Lakeland District Council chairman Cllr Sylvia Emmott and army Captain Steve Firth, to celebrate the role of the armed forces past and present.

Joining them were Dave Horseman of the Royal British Legion, Neil Allison of the Sea Cadets, representatives from Queen Katherine and Kirkbie Kendal schools and SLDC chief executive Lawrence Conway.

Two Sea Cadet buglers played The Last Post and Reveille as the flag was raised.

Cllr Emmott thanked the armed forces for "their hard work and effort in keeping us safe".

Meanwhile, 35 students from QKS are to travel to France in July to visit battlegrounds on the Somme. The pupils are to follow in the footsteps of troops a century ago, and they have researched the history of two soldiers from Kendal who made the journey.
