AN early General Election should take place following the imminent appointment of Theresa May as the new Prime Minister, believes South Lakes MP and leader of the Liberal Democrats Tim Farron.

Mrs May is set to be confirmed as the country's new leader today following the shock withdrawal from the Tory leadership race by Andrea Leadsom.

Mr Farron said: "There is simply no way that Theresa May should be crowned Prime Minister without even having won an election in her own party, let alone the country.

"She has not set out an agenda, and she has no right to govern. She has not won an election and the public must have their say! Britain deserves better than this."
