WRECKERS have 'completely destroyed' an expensive sports car parked in a popular South Lakeland lay-by.

Judy Dixon, 55, and her husband David, 58, from Bolton-le-Sands, went on a walk after seeing the route centred on Crooklands in The Westmorland Gazette.

They parked their 2010 Audi TT Quattro just off the main road near Crooklands roundabout at approximately 12.30pm on Sunday.

When they returned from the walk three hours later, they found their car in a state which Cumbria police described at the time as being ‘completely destroyed.’

“There were 15 other cars parked there,” said Mrs Dixon. “But they just did ours. It was like someone had gone at it with a sledge hammer.”

The windows of the car had been smashed in and a 'boulder' had been thrown through the rear window and left on the back seat.

“It was extremely upsetting,” said Mrs Dixon. “My husband kept that car immaculate. It was a nice car, and that’s probably the reason why it was targeted.”

Mrs Dixon had left her handbag on the back seat with money and credit cards inside but nothing was taken.

“It’s completely senseless,” she said. “If they had taken my purse I would have understood, because I was stupid enough to leave it but they didn’t even take it.”

Despite the publicity the police appeal for information no witnesses have come forward.

“What I don’t understand is that how come nobody has seen anything,” said Mrs Dixon said. “It was a really busy road and drivers were just staring at us to see what was going on when the police came. It’s unbelievable that nobody saw anything.”

Mrs Dixon, who paid £17,000 for the car with her husband, said: “This car was ours to enjoy, just a bit of fun before the grandchildren come along and we need to get a sensible car.”

Following the incident Mrs Dixon recounted her story on social media and discovered that this particular lay-by is a vandalism hot spot.

“I am talking about this to stop other people from parking there and someone else doesn’t have to go through this experience,” said Mrs Dixon. “It’s sad that someone gets their kicks doing something like that.”

The Dixons are waiting to hear back from their insurance company.

A Cumbria Police spokesperson said that a spate of similar incidents had occurred two years ago over the summer period but there has not been any incidents of vandalism in the area since.
