A NEW field shelter and hay store for alpacas near Kendal met with approval from planners.

Mr and Mrs P Colman, of West Barn, Barrows Green, already have five of the soft-haired South American mammals and hope to increase their herd to 25, according to plans lodged with South Lakeland District Council.

The 'modest' new building, on land at Sillfield Farm, Gatebeck, is to measure 11m by 4m, with local stone-clad walls and green metal sheet roofing.

The alpacas need indoor shelter from rainy, cold weather as their fleeces contain no lanolin or natural oils, state planning documents.

A previously unauthorised field shelter at the farm is to be removed. The new building will be located in a dip to minimise impact on the landscape.
