WHY can't nurses be apprentices and learn 'on the job' as they used to do?

They would be very useful and gain valuable experience working alongside senior nurses.

They could have 'day-release' to attend specialist courses.

Nursing is a very rewarding career, and with the chronic shortage of nurses, why make it even more difficult and costly for those who feel they really do have a vocation?
