I WAS travelling through Kendal this morning and joined the queue immediately after crossing over Netherfield Bridge and this continued until I reached the end of Station Road. The problem was caused by a set of traffic lights set up in Station Road for what appeared to be minor works being carried out on the pavement.

Because traffic was having to move stop/start and could not enter Sandes Avenue from Blackhall Road, even when the lights were green as there was no space for them to proceed into, long queues backed up right through town. This same problem also applied to traffic moving along Sandes Avenue who were held at green due the traffic turning right out of Blackhall Road blocking the junction.

Who could guess that such a problem would be caused, certainly not those responsible for setting up the lights.

MORE TOP STORIES:

We are always being confronted by some injudiciously placed temporary signage placed in the road - a further example is the sign placed right on the junction of Burton Road/Oxenholme Road indicating 'Works in Progress'. I will be surprised if a car or possibly a truck does not collide with it due to the new lane markings which narrows that section of Burton Road.

I have avoided the ‘disaster’ in Wildman Street but I would ask if any survey was carried out as to just how many cyclists use Wildman Street before the current restrictions were set up.

If not, why not. I wish the local authorities were as keen to ensure that pedestrians have unfettered use of the pavements around town, as not only are pedestrians now having to share them with cyclists but we have for a long time had to share them with the many cars which illegally park on them.

I have great sympathy for those using disability scooters as using our pavements must be most difficult.
