A MULTIPLE car collision on the M6 caused traffic chaos this evening.

A number of casualties were reported after the crash between the Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale junctions at around 5.20pm.

Police diverted traffic from the motorway, causing gridlock on nearby roads and in Kendal town centre.

The fire service said a number of cars were involved in the accident and there are multiple casualties, but there was no information on any fatalities.

The southbound carriageway between junctions 36 and 37 reopened after two hours, but the northbound carriageway remained closed while the wreckage was cleared.

A police spokeswoman urged drivers to avoid the area if at all possible.
