Celebrations are set to begin this month to mark 20 successful years of a daring community venture which has helped thousands of people to keep fit.
Dalton Leisure Centre, in Chapel Street, Dalton-in-Furness, was opened in August 1987, thanks to the vision of Mel Turner, once head teacher at Dowdales School in the town.
In 1976, he appealed for help to realise his dream of having a much-needed swimming pool in the town and, after a spirited public response, more than £1 million was raised and the centre was opened 11 years later.
And that community spirit lives on today with The Dalton-in-Furness and District Recreational Charity Trust continuing to take care of the important venue.
