To mark the 200th anniversary of The Westmorland Gazette in 2018, we are publishing a photograph from our archives on our website every day this year.
Today's photograph shows a huge blaze that destroyed the former St George's Theatre at Blackhall Road, Kendal, on a Sunday afternoon in February 1992.
Thick black smoke and flames rose from the roof of the building.
The fire spread to nearby flats but only two were damaged.
Up to 70 firefighters and ten appliances form Kendal, Windermere, Grange-over-Sands, Staveley, Milnthorpe, Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh were called to tackle the raging fire. At one stage firefighters had to set up a water relay from the River Kent as so many hose reel jets were being used.
Thankfully no-one was injured in the blaze.
