FORTY-SIX competitors, including nine boats from the Royal Windermere Yacht Club, competed in the Flying Fifteen Northern Championship on Windermere at the weekend, with renowned local sail maker Steve Goacher winning the weekend’s competition by a narrow margin.
Steve is the current Flying 15 World Champion. His yacht was crewed by Tim Harper.
The weekend, hosted by the Royal Windermere Yacht Club, involved five races and an Olympic course of ‘triangles and sausages’ on day one and a ‘windward leeward’ course on day two. On Saturday, calm conditions proved problematic as the start time approached but excitement mounted as a breeze came from the south and the race was off.
Sunday morning dawned much colder, with rain and a forecast of more wind.
The weekend’s event is a significant championship and also a world qualifier event.
