A DEVOTED Kendal couple are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary on Wednesday (June 6).

Margaret and Bobbie Rodgers. of Heron Hill, married at St. Andrew’s Church, Dacre, in 1953 and honeymooned in Southend-on-Sea.

The couple have enjoyed many holidays throughout their marriage both around the UK and abroad.

Some of their most enjoyable trips were on five cruises that they took.

Their first home was in Newbiggin, near Dacre, where their two daughters - Patricia Carlos and Judith Schofield - were born.

In 1963, they moved to Shap and ran a successful bed and breakfast business for six years. The couple have lived in Kendal since 1969.

Margaret worked as a nurse both before and after her marriage and ended her nursing career at Kendal Green Hospital.

She finished her career in 1981 as an accounts clerk for South Lakeland District Council, having previously worked at both Goodacres and Danish Bacon.

She then founded and ran 'The Friendly Club' for over 55s to provide activities and encourage friendship at the Kendal Leisure Centre until 1987.

Then in 1997, she started a similar group called 'The Beck Seniors' at the Heron Hill Beck Community Centre which finished in 2017.

Bobbie began his career as a driver for Flusco Lime Works. He also drove for other companies, including West Cumberland Farmers and Fergusons.

He then worked for the North West Water Authority at Watchgate Treatment Plant for 20 years until he retired in 1997.

Margaret and Bobbie have been members of Heron Hill Free Church for the last 25 years.

They previously attended St. Marks Church, Natland where Bobbie served as a church warden.

The couple have three grandchildren; Stephanie, Shaun and Louise and two great-grandchildren; Jack and Layla.
