I read with interest the letter ‘Days on the Lake’ by Joyce M Hilton of Kendal (Letters, July 26). She made reference to watching a film being made at Waterhead in the Fifties called ‘The One That Got Away’. Famous German actor, Hardy Kruger starred as a German pilot, Franz Von Werra.
The year would have been 1957 but no filming was done at Waterhead.
Perhaps the film crew may have visited there for tea!
I know this film well as I have it on DVD and video.
The locations in the Lake District would have been Grizedale/Satterthwaite, Coniston and Ulpha/Birker Moor – perhaps your reader may have mistaken this film for ‘The Dambusters’, which partly used Windermere in the filming – I do not know the year that film was made but I would think also the Fifties.
