ORGANISERS of The Ulverston Gardeners' Society annual show described the event in the town's Coronation Hall as "brilliant."

Grower Mary Barnes said despite the "very mixed" summer weather the overall standard was "very good", with increased entries in nearly every section

There were record entries in the rose classes with Mark Hewertson, of Egremont, winning the Rose Society UK’s bronze medal for best bloom and the best exhibit with a vase of Floribunda Roses.

An increased number of dahlias saw Jim Athersmith, of Ulverston, win the National Dahlia Society medal for best flowers with a vase of three medium decorative blooms. John Bell, of Ulverston, won best exhibit in the Chrysanthemum classes at only his second show.

There were some eye-catching collections in the vegetable classes with displays of "fantastic quality" potatoes, tomatoes and onions. A collection of three different kinds of vegetables displayed by Keith Hardman, of Dalton, won the National Vegetable Society Medal for best exhibit.

Pot plants, annuals, perennials, cookery, handicrafts, photography and some imaginative children’s work completed the show.

The Blue Ribbon for the best horticultural exhibit in show was won by Jim Athersmith’s dahlias and the South Cumbia Award of Merit was won by Keith Hardman’s collection of vegetables.
