THE community-spirited members of Carnforth Rotary Club have been commended for their charitable works.

The club received a coveted Rotary International Presidential Citation for the year 2017 to 2018 - its first ever, and one of only three awarded to the 67 clubs in Lancashire and Cumbria.

Past district governor Larry Branyan presented the accolade to Kath Bromilow MBE, past president of Carnforth Rotary Club.

As Mr Branyan explained, Rotary citations recognise the achievement of goals such as raising club membership, giving service to the community and building awareness of Rotary's humanitarian work.

The Carnforth club's activities included its annual Christmas sleigh appeal, health fair at Carnforth High School and car boot sale in Lancaster; store collections for disaster relief; clubs for primary and secondary school children; a fundraising meal for the campaign to eradicate polio worldwide; and sponsoring children to go on youth leadership courses.

Future events include a sponsored walk along the Lancaster Canal on Saturday, October 6 to raise at least £800 to ship a container of wheelchairs, crutches and walking frames etc to the port of Tanga for use by patients at St Elizabeth’s Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania; and a charity concert on Saturday, October 27, featuring the K Shoes’ Male Voice Choir with the Ladies of Note at St Oswald’s Church, Warton.

The club meets weekly at the Longlands Hotel, Tewitfield, and is always keen to welcome new members. For more, see www.carnforthrotary1190.org
