FOR the first time in Judo history three competitors from South Lakeland have qualified for the National Kata Squad.
A family from Staveley rallied together to compete at the National Kata Championships in Cardiff. Mum Sylvia Barton, daughter Gillian Elliot and husband Nick Elliot both came away from the competition clutching gold and silver medals.
The contenders were judged on their choreographed routine and judo techniques, and marked with a score out of ten.
Senior Coach John Barton said: " I am absolutely chuffed. I am very proud of what they've achieved and as a club what we have achieved so far."
This is a first for the self-funding Staveley and Burneside Judo Club to have three of its members to qualify for the Kata National Squad.
Training with the national squad is expected to start very soon in Burneside, said Mr Barton. "To have something this high calibre down the road is so unique for the club"
