This year's must surely have been the most impressive nationwide outpouring of remembrance of those who gave their lives for their country.
A veritable ocean of poppies appeared throughout the land.
Moving though this unprecedented expression of the nation's feeling was, I found one other event even more significant and full of hope for the future.
The presidents and prime ministers of several leading countries, including Britain, came together as one to commemorate the fallen.
Prominent among them were Angela Merkel of Germany and Vladimir Putin from Russia (after all, who can forget Stalingrad?).
May this be a universal change from making war to making peace together.
