SOUTH Lakeland District Council looks set to pledge £100,000 to the Lakeland Arts Trust at a meeting next week.
The trust is planning an £8.5 million “world class” redevelopment of the Abbot Hall art gallery in Kendal.
It has asked for financial backing in order to unlock other multi-million pound grants, particularly £4.6 million from Arts Council England.
The trust has asked for £125,000 but council officers are recommending a sum of £100,000.
A report to go before a cabinet meeting in Kendal said: “Officers have considered the proposed scheme and are recommending support of £100,000 towards the project as a meaningful contribution towards the project.
Abbot Hall has not had a significant refurbishment since 1962, according to the council report. Yet its collection is described as one of the most “largest and most significant of its kind in the region.”
