A SOUTH Lakeland choir is taking its music to those who cannot get to Christmas concerts as they are housebound.

The Kendal community choir Lakeland Voices practices every week at the Castle Street Centre, and at this time of year can often heard singing in the town's Market Place on a Saturday morning.

But when members heard about the number of housebound people in the town who cannot get out to hear Christmas music, it was decided to take the songs to them.

The intrepid choir is often seen singing on walks during the summer months through the Lakeland fells. They sing on the tops of fells, in woods, beside waterfalls and by the open fires of country pubs.

"As much as possible we try to make our singing walks accessible to everyone and choose routes such as the "miles without stiles" footpaths which are accessible for those in wheelchairs," says Lakeland Voices choir leader David Burbidge.

"We thought that as this season is so much about kindness to those in need that this was something we could do to bring some happiness to those who are housebound."

"Especially welcome to invite the choir are those who can't get out of their homes," said Mr Burbidge.

"But anyone who enjoys cheery seasonal songs and some cracking harmony singing are welcome to get in touch, and we'll come and sing for you. Essentially, the evening will be a series of free house concerts across Kendal."

This Sunday the choir will be singing carols in the Black Bull hotel at 4.30pm. This will be followed by a starlit walk through the winter landscape, singing at the doors of cottages cradled in the dale

The choir is inviting anyone who would like to host them in their homes to get in touch. Call David Burbidge, 015396.21166, or visit the website www.lakelandvoice.co.uk
