A DEDICATED charity worker, who was recently awarded an OBE, has been given yet another prestigious appointment for her voluntary services.

Helen Bingley, a non-executive director at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay trust, was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for Lancashire on Monday.

A deputy lieutenant is a Crown appointment and they receive their commission of appointment via the appropriate government minister by command of the Queen.

Mrs Bingley will support the Lord Lieutenant through assisting him in carrying out his role as the Queen’s representative.

Deputy Lieutenants also assist with assessments for The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, suggesting names for invitation to Royal garden parties and presiding at citizenship ceremonies.

Mrs Bingley acts as Mind in Furness treasurer and has supported the charity in various roles for more than 10 years.

She is also CEO of the Caton-based Abaseen Foundation, which provides education, health, research and humanitarian relief to some of the poorest people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in north west Pakistan.

The foundation was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – an MBE for voluntary groups – in 2017.

Mrs Bingley said she felt honoured to be offered such a position.

“For me it’s a great honour and privilege that I can serve the community that I care so much about," she said. “I was taken aback to be offered to do such a privileged role. I’m just an ordinary girl that has worked hard all my life into success.

“To be given this honour is enormous and such a privilege. The important thing is being able to serve my community as well as I can.”
