PARKING charges look set to be brought in at a large and well-used “free” car park in Kendal.

The rear of County Hall in Busher Walk is being lined up for pay and display machines and new restrictions by landowners, Cumbria County Council.

A report said the car park is intended for the private use of county council staff only but there is “significant use” of the area as a free car park.

Some of the parking has been described as “inappropriate and dangerous” with staff and councillors “blocked in,” according to the report.

Pay and display parking also looks set to be brought in at other places on Busher Walk where people park their cars for free.

The other sites are an area of land opposite Kendal Police station, a patch of land opposite the fire station and ambulance station, and a smaller car park close to Busher Walk’s junction with Stricklandgate.

CCC's South Lakeland local committee will discuss the proposals at its meeting in Kendal on Tuesday (January 29).
