AN INSPIRATIONAL Grange-over-Sands dad who lost both legs while serving in the Army has been nominated for a prestigious award for his courage in overcoming adversity.

Darren Swift suffered horrific injuries following a bomb blast in Northern Ireland in 1991, but resolved to conquer his disability and after years of incredible feats including cycling across Iceland, skydiving and white water canoeing, he has now become a trailblazer in the sport of competitive snowboarding.

And his efforts have now been recognised by a nomination for an Endeavour Fund Award, which celebrate the achievements of those injured in service who have taken part in remarkable sporting and adventure challenges over the last year.

"He is wholly deserving of the highest level of recognition," said John Connelly of the Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team.

"He has inspired, led and innovated whilst remaining determined to succeed for himself and others in the face of enormous and protracted adversity.”

Darren, 53, served in the British Army for 10 years before being medically discharged in 1992.

But following his discharge, he defied his injuries by taking part in a series of sporting challenges, and in 2003 took gold in the British skydiving championships.

Darren then moved on to snowboarding and made an incredible impact as with the support of the Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team, he competed in the World Cups for Great Britain and making a huge impact.

“Having the tremendous support of the Endeavour Fund has been instrumental in my development as an adaptive snowboarder and enabling me to pass on skills in the development of other amputees and people with disabilities who wish to participate in the sport at any level,” he said.

And Darren's efforts have been rewarded with a nomination for The Henry Worsley Award for those who have best inspired others through the demonstration of determination in the face of adversity.

The winner will be announced at the Endeavour Fund Awards will be held in London on February 7 at a glittering ceremony which will be attended by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
