100 years – 1919
The first of a series of welcomes was held in the Bryce Institute, Burneside for returned sailors and soldiers and their wives. Dinner was provided, followed by free entertainment, music, singing and dancing. Mr C. J. Cropper was in the chair and on behalf of the parish welcomed all boys home and said how delightful it was to see so many of them in their old familiar places.
50 years – 1969
The Mayor and Kendal Corporation were taken to court by six of the town's residents over a battle of a street name. They were objecting to the re-naming of their cul-de-sac, which for the last two years has been known - unofficially - as Bowling Fell Close. It was intended that the cul-de-sac was to become part of Captain French Lane.
25 years – 1994
Dog owners look set to be made responsible for cleaning up the mess their pets make while taking them for walks. South Lakeland District Council's environmental health committee this week approved in principle, new by-laws involving the use of poop scoops, a much cheaper scheme than providing bins.
