SOUTH Lakeland Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament members agreed unanimously to affiliate to CND UK at a well attended meeting in Kendal.

They agreed unanimously to campaign for CND UK's agreed objectives, including the global abolition of nuclear weapons and the closure of the nuclear power industry.

The meeting was addressed by Kate Hudson, general secretary of CND UK, and Marianne Birkby, of Radiation Free Lakeland.

Ms Hudson outlined the threats to peace resulting from President Trump’s decision to withdraw the USA from nuclear arms control treaties and from the UK Government’s refusal to discuss the United Nations’ Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

She urged all supporters of CND to campaign vigorously for peace and disarmament at all levels.

Ms Birkby highlighted the threats to health and safety of people in Cumbria from "the very large amounts of dangerous nuclear waste" already stored around Sellafield, and urged campaigners to vigorously oppose plans to impose new nuclear power on Cumbria.

Spokesperson for South Lakeland CND, Philip Gilligan, said: “We are very pleased to be building on the foundations laid by previous groups such as the former Kendal and District CND group.

"Our campaign is needed now more than ever. We live in very dangerous times which are made more dangerous by nuclear weapons and by nuclear power.

"We need to campaign for a nuclear free future and we need to do this, not just nationally and internationally, but locally."
