A YOUNG boy has delivered a set of triplet lambs on a small holding in Leece.

Taking the term ‘initiative’ to the next level, Jake Cooper successful delivery of three newly-birthed lambs - watched by proud dad Jack Cooper, 25, and grandad Brian.

Now managing his busy schedule as a part-time veterinarian at the family’s Ulverston-based holding, Jake’s incredible new life-giving skills are a year in the making as his mother, Faye Hall, 22, further explained.

She said: “It all started during last year’s lambing season when Jake was only two-years-old.

“His dad saw how much interest our boy took with the lambing process, which isn’t always the nicest thing to see.”

Not being fazed by the whole experience, Jake’s father gave his son a dose of responsibility by giving him a couple of domesticated Jacob sheep to care for and feed.

With a total stock of just under 150 sheep, Jake’s dad and grandad needed all the help they could get and were thrilled when the three-year-old stepped up his game for this year’s lambing season.

Faye added: “Even though he’s been trusted with his two Jacobs, it seems Jake likes to think all of the sheep are his responsibility, which is great to see.”

Above all though, Faye said this life experience has brought Jake and his grandad closer together.

“His grandad has definitely become his role model - when he’s not ‘mucking out’ the cows, shovelling hay or cleaning the Bobcat digger bucket with his dad, Jake follows Brian about; copying his actions and mannerisms," she said.

“I’ll just see Jake walking behind his grandad and imitating him - and helping him too.”

Although Jake is showing early signs of raw talent when it comes to delivering lambs, his parents understand it is up to him to choose his own path in later life.

“We’d love Jake to carry on doing this as he gets older if that’s what he wants to do, but it won’t be forced onto him," said Faye.

“At the moment he is showing he’s extremely keen and I’m sure this is what he will grow up wanting to do.

“He loves lambing season and I know he will carry on helping his dad and grandad for many years to come with lambing the sheep.

“Jake’s very keen to show off his skills and loves telling people about the good work what he’s doing with our animals.”

Faye hinted at possibly doing an open day next year to show Jake’s friends a live demonstration of lambing, but nothing is set in stone at this early stage.

With Cumbria’s lambing season in full throes, one thing is for sure, Jake will have a few ‘lamb tales’ to tell to his nursery pals.
