Caroline Gilfillan says there are plenty of ways at Ulverston to tap into your creativity

Are you someone who loves getting arty?

Wandering around Printfest last weekend reminded me that it was time I dived into the world of arts and crafts again. And Ulverston is a great place to do that.

If you want to tap into your creativity and have fun along the way, why not try one of the workshops run by Ulverston artist Fran Riley?

I went to a session a few weeks ago and got myself covered in glue and paint – and loved every minute.

Hosted in her Ulverston house, workshops encourage participants to dip their hands into a treasure trove of materials – paper, inks, sequins, fabric – you name it, you’ll find it in Fran’s welcoming work space.

As she puts it: "Many people find their creativity gets squashed out by the demands of life and this is a great opportunity to carve out one and a half hours of blissful creativity.""

She also runs monthly Saturday workshops. You can find her on Facebook, or call her on 07503 431825.

Or you could try out some new craft techniques at one of the Saturday morning Make and Create workshops at the Coronation Hall, led by Fran Riley, Hannah Houghton and Lex Blakeway.

They are great for families. Details are on the Coronation Hall website.

If printmaking is your thing, check out the workshops offered by PrintShare, an Ulverston group of printmakers. You can try your hand at mono printing, linocut, paper lithography and drypoint. www.printsharelakes.co.uk.

Fancy drawing? Then get yourself down to one of the Drink and Draw sessions held at Natterjacks in Ulverston and the Tally Ho in Barrow, organised by Tim Leeson and Denny Derbyshire.

These friendly sessions held on Wednesdays from 7.30pm to 9pm offer the chance to socialise as well as share drawing with like-minded souls. There are more details on Facebook Drink and Draw pages.

All these workshops are a tonic for people like me who never excelled in art classes at school. I’ve loved my forays into arty creativity, and the fruits of my labour are on my wall.

If I can do it, so can you.
