TWO people were freed by firefighters after a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A685.

The road was closed in both directions, between J38 of the M6 and the A66, near Kirkby Stephen for several hours following the incident.

Police and firefighters were called to the scene at around 4pm yesterday.

The incident involved a Renault Clio and a Ford Focus.

A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “At 4:06pm two fire engines from Kirkby Stephen and Sedbergh attended reports of a road traffic collision with persons trapped on the A685, Kirkby Stephen.

“Fire crews used Holmatro cutting gear to extricate two casualties and passed them to the care of paramedics and the air ambulance.

“Fire crews were in attendance for approximately one hour and thirty minutes.”

Officers said the driver of the Renault Clio was taken to hospital in Preston while three passengers in the Ford Focus were taken to hospital in Lancaster. The driver of the Ford Focus was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.
