A KENDAL school is celebrating an all-round success following a visit from a school inspector.

St Thomas’s Church of England School, on Kendal Green, was said to “require improvement” following a critical Ofsted report a couple of years ago.

But the staff have “worked tirelessly” since to rebuild the educational structure into “the great place for learning it is today”. St Thomas’s has now received a “good” Ofsted recommendation with “outstanding” in early years’ provision and personal development, behaviour and welfare.

Head teacher Maggie Cole said the report truly reflected “the story of the whole school”.

“I am very proud to lead and belong to a great team of staff where every child is encouraged to ‘believe, achieve, succeed’.” she said.

“Our children are amazing and always a credit to our school. A big thank you to our whole school community who have supported and encouraged us on our road to making our school a fantastic place to be and learn.”

The report stated that St Thomas’s had taken “effective steps” to raise pupils’ achievement across the school. Staff provided a “a warm, welcoming and engaging environment” and encouraged every pupil to “flourish and achieve the best of their ability”.

“Leaders and governors have effectively shared their vision for an inclusive and caring school, firmly rooted in the school’s Christian ethos.” said the inspector.

The report mentioned that since the previous inspection, teachers had improved their systems for checking pupils’ learning and progress, including for disadvantaged pupils.

The inspector praised the school for providing a “broad, balanced and rich curriculum” for the pupils with a “wide range of opportunities to develop resilience, confidence and a breadth of knowledge”.

Mick Brookes, chair of governors, said: “ We are delighted that St Thomas’s Early Years provision has now got the recognition it has long deserved and we are proud that the school has retained its positive ethos as well as ensuring that academic results have greatly improved. Congratulations to the whole school community”
