AS A student living in Grange in the summer of 1967 I managed to get a holiday job working as an assistant to the surveyors with the firm Huntings, who had been given the contract for the feasibility survey for a barrage across Morecambe Bay.
We worked out of Flookburgh with the local fishermen by tractor, setting out lines across the bay for five preferred options for a barrage, monitoring sand movements/drawing profiles etc
Working between the tides, we soon realised what a dangerous place the bay was, with rapidly approaching tides and hidden quicksands, and how Huntings later produced a comprehensive report in two volumes which I still have, as my mother, who was chair of Grange Council around that time, was privy to the findings.
