A COMMUNITY day at Warton Crag was held as part of a wider programme to improve the area.

It is hoped ecological work can be carried out on the open space, picnic site and car park at the entrance to Warton Crag. This area serves as a ‘gateway’ to the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Natural Beauty (AONB).

On the ‘Gateway’ project, Belinda Barclay, a nature reserve warden with the AONB, said the organisation was aiming to achieve “long-term protection of the grassland areas”.

She added: “We have an overarching goal of giving the site a total refresh and to motivate the next generation of volunteers.”

According to Ms Barclay, the AONB is also planning to provide further visitor information about the area, as well as ‘bespoke’ trail markers and an events and activities programme.

A ‘community engagement’ event was held at the weekend so the AONB could share its ideas about the site and gain insight from local people. There were also bug hunts for the children.

The ‘Gateway’ project is being run in conjunction with Lancashire County Council, and has been funded by the Lancashire Environmental Fund and the AONB.
