Crosthwaite and Lyth...

AT THE meeting of Crosthwaite and Lyth Parish Council, updates were given on the joint parish council/Highways England working party on A590. Highways England was satisfied that all problems along the stretch from Brettargh Holt to Meathop roundabout had been identified. The most important intervention would be the introduction of a twin roundabout at Gilpin Bridge. Pending funding applications, completion would be by 2024 with smaller, lower cost work being carried out in the meantime. Other matters raised included replacing a bus shelter and the provision of cycleways along this stretch of the A590. Simon Johnson reported on work being done by the neighbourhood plan steering group, full details available on the parish website. The council agreed with the appointment of Graham Paine to the steering group and would be looking for new members to join. Those interested should contact the neighbourhood group through the community website crosthwaiteandlyth.co.uk.
The council is still looking for someone to lease a package of woodland with a stream at Hubbersty Head; contact Martin French, clerk to the council, at crosthwaiteandlyth.pc@hotmail.co.uk. The next meeting is October 1, (7.30pm) at the parish rooms.

A MESSY Church event entitled The Parables of Sower takes place on Saturday, September 14 (10.30am-12.30pm) at Crosthwaite School hall. It includes games and craft activities as well as worship and lunch together. Telephone Natalie Fletcher on 07799-384278 for details or to advise her you will be attending.

THE next Crosthwaite and Lyth WI meeting takes place on Wednesday, September 18 (7.30pm) in the village hall. Speaker, Dr Mike Young, will give a talk entitled Travels with a divining rod through the Sultanate of Oman.

AN INDOOR sports and social night will be held at Crosthwaite Village Hall, on September 21 (7pm-9pm), suitable for all the family. Entry is free, with a small charge and cash prizes for some games. Activities include darts, table tennis, shooling, dominoes, boules, cash prize bingo, trivia quiz, children’s prize-every- time games and amusements. Light refreshments, tea coffee and soft drinks for sale, but take your own alcohol. This promises to be a fun night.

Crook...

AT THE Crook WI meeting the speaker was Julia Beedon. She had researched the meaning of all the members’ first names. Some discovered they were jewels and others had names dating back thousands of years.
The memorial hall has had an autumn clean up, both inside and outside. Members of the WI filled two trailers with debris from the car park and the ladies are now happy to report that there is a bright new floor in the kitchen.

Underbarrow...

THE celebrations for the 150th year of the building of All Saints’ Church concluded with a show, Underbarrow Tales Tall and Wide, presented by the Underbarrow Spontaneous Drama Group. On behalf of both the cast and the audience, Peter Smith the MC thanked Steve Rawlinson who had written and presented the four short plays. The cast of ten people entertained the full house to fantastical tales of the Underbarrow gold rush, the story of the Kendal clock, a story of letters between Underbarrow and Jamaica, and some goings-on in the days of Underbarrow School.

THE next meeting of the parish council is on Tuesday, September 17 (7pm) at the institute. The public are welcome to attend and can raise local issues. The cash and budget statements will be discussed, updates given on the village hall and the mushroom on Scout Scar, and there is mention of an Underbarrow tree planting scheme.

THE Marrow Day committee would welcome donations for the tombola stall, please take them to the Black Labrador pub, or to Maggie Stockdale. Bottles, cans, gifts and small children’s items, new or nearly new are required.
