MORE than three years of research has culminated in the release of a book in which the names of thousands of fields in the Rusland Valley have been interpreted.

‘What’s in a name?’, put together by a dedicated group of 15 volunteers, was officially launched during a celebration at Graythwaite Hall, Ulverston.

By studying maps and local archives, and through conversations with residents, the team was able to document the names of more than 2,500 fields.

The volunteers were part of the Mapped Histories group, one of the 15 projects which make up the lottery-funded Rusland Horizons Landscape Partnership Scheme.

Mandy Lane, lead author, said it was estimated around 80 per cent of field names in the Rusland Valley area had been recorded.

She added producing the book had been “a fascinating and enjoyable process.”

The book can be purchased by calling 07908 986 795 or at Sutton’s Bookshop, Ulverston.
