WORLD powerboat record holder Helen Loney - known as Princess of the Lakes - will be hoping to beat her own best speed from 2005 when she takes her new boat Firefly to the water during Coniston Records Week.

Lake District-born Ms Loney, who is a member of Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club, will compete for the Electric Record Team UK in the 15ft hydroplane, which is specially designed for straight-line record speed.

The boat, powered by electric motors, has a design capability' of up to 130mph.

"Records Week will be our first opportunity to run the new boat under record conditions," said Ms Loney. "We intend to increase our speed gradually between 60 and 90mph to allow us to monitor the set up during the week. Our ultimate aim is to break the 100mph barrier in an electric boat and time will tell if our new innovative clean green design and technology will work."
