A HALF-hour cruise aboard an Ullswater Steamer while being serenaded by a virtuoso guitarist is surely one of the most original means of transporting competitors to the start of any race in the UK running calendar.

Taking place on Saturday the event has been affectionately dubbed the "Steamy Surprise".

It is a new "bonus event" in the popular Lakeland Trails series, all 600 places aboard the three Ullswater Steamer sailings a sell-out.

From the start in the pretty hamlet of Howtown, the competitors run along a scenic 12km course that has been back to the finishing arena in Glenridding.

A festive, party atmosphere will be awaiting the tired finishers, with live music and a post-race meal feast provided by Staveley outdoor caterers Wilf's.

Children's fun runs taking place in the early afternoon for different age groups, with entries being taken on the day.

There will be face-painting, bouncy castles, slides, food stalls and retail stands.

The event is being sponsored by Ullswater Steamers and lifestyle brand Puma, with £1000 worth of Puma product on offer in prizes.
