A CAMPAIGN for a reduced speed limit by residents of a Furness village has been successful as county councillors this week imposed a restriction on the A595 at Foxfield.

Members of the South Lakeland area committee agreed the speed limit should be brought down to 30mph through the village following the submission of a 150-name petition and individual letters from residents requesting action.

They said vehicles travelled through Foxfield in preference to the alternative route through Broughton-in-Furness, which made pulling out on to the road extremely difficult, and dangerous, for residents.

Coun Oliver Pearson, a South Lakeland area committee member, said: "This is a very heavily used road and I would urge members to support this scheme."

Work to impose the limit, which will include installing new roadside signs and an illuminated warning light for drivers, will cost £25,000.

The funds have been made available for the scheme through a grant from the Government for works to roads that were de-trunked from October 1, 2006.

South Lakeland was allocated £168,000 based on the route length of the de-trunked A595, while the remaining £372,000 went to Copeland for works to the A5092.

The committee also approved £30,000 of funding to upgrade lighting in Greenodd to current standards and £25,000 for signing improvements and junction enhancements at the A5092 and B5281 junction near Gawthwaite.
