Fears are growing that Kendal's tax office could be one of hundreds around the country to be axed in a sweeping cost-cutting programme.
HM Revenue and Customs has ordered a review of the Shap Road office to be carried out next April as part of a major plan to reduce overheads nationally.
HMRC offices in Lancaster, Barrow, Whitehaven and Penrith are also to be examined as part of the wide-ranging consultation process.
