A BOWNESS charity shop is desperately seeking more volunteers in a bid to stop it from closing.

The Oxfam shop at Quarry Rigg say that the shop is close to crisis point because of a severe lack of volunteer staff to cover the shifts.

Jenny Regan, the shop manager said that the shop, which has been running for around 27 years, was struggling to stay open and would eventually have to close all together if not enough staff were sought.

She said: "The older people who man the shop are retired through ill health and younger ones are not coming forward.

"The end result of this is that if the shop has to shut on too many occasions because of staff shortages, it will become unviable as we have targets to meet.

"It's a very, worthwhile thing to do, by giving three hours a week, you are doing something for the greater good."

She added that all training for volunteers would be provided and no experience was needed, although anyone with an interest in sorting and valuing books would be welcome.
