A CANDIDATE in the Liberal Democrat leadership race visited Longsleddale near Kendal this morning (November 2) to meet hill farmers who have felt first hand the effects of foot and mouth.
Nick Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam, arrived bright and early at Ubarrow Hall to hold an informal yet serious discussion with local farmers about the problems they were facing and the possible solutions to the farming crisis.
In what proved to be a fruitful question and answer session, with both sides quizzing one another, the group touched upon issues such as insufficient compensation for farmers affected by foot and mouth, the importance of hill farming to the natural landscape of the Lake District, the exploitation of the situation by the major supermarkets and the need for restrictions to be lifted on exports into the European market.
The lack of advertising was also highlighted, with farmers calling for an increased media campaign by the government to promote British lamb.
