A NEWSPAPER deliveryman was left feeling flushed after firefighters had to rescue him from a toilet.

The unusual 999 call came on Tuesday morning when the man, who was in his late 20s, got trapped in a disabled toilet in Flookburgh.

A passer-by out walking his dog raised the alarm after hearing cries from the public convenience, on the Moorside estate, at 7am.

Station watch manager Bernard Keeley, from Grange-over-Sands Fire Station, said the red-faced deliveryman had been unable to unlock the loo from the inside, and had spent more than an hour in pitch black after the lights, which were on a time delay switch, went out.

"The man was getting rather upset because he was trapped inside in the dark and felt claustrophobic," said Mr Keeley, who attended the incident with one appliance and used small tools to chip the lock off.

Mr Keeley said the man continued on his rounds after being released from the building.
