A KENDAL school was able to purchase a new beehive thanks to a contribution from a leading UK house-building firm.

The £300 donation from Jones Homes enabled Heron Hill Primary School to expand its already-impressive apiary, which has been helping the children learn about the ecological system around them for more than three years. The apiary project is led by a ‘bee team’ made up of pupils.

The new ‘long hive’, built by Green Earth Hives, requires less heavy lifting than the hives currently being used, meaning that disabled children and those with limited mobility will be able to take part in activities.

Carl Barlow, sales director at Jones Homes, which is building 110 homes off Milnthorpe Road in Kendal, said: “It is clear that our donation of £300 to Heron Hill School to buy a new long hive has had a tremendous impact on the children and we couldn’t be happier.

“Aside from benefitting the children at Heron Hill, the hive will also be made available to pupils visiting the apiary from other schools nearby.

“Heron Hill Primary School’s initiative is a worthy project, in terms of both educational and environmental impact.

“We are glad to be supporting the school in its endeavours and hope to visit the apiary again soon to see how their work is progressing.”
