MORE than 40 sub-post offices in South Lakeland have been put on a "high risk" list as part of the Post Office's plans to slash its nationwide network by 2,500 branches.

Post Office Ltd has refused to say which individual sub-post offices are under threat, but The Westmorland Gazette can reveal only a handful of branches have been told they are likely to be safe.

Out of 50 post offices in MP Tim Farron's Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency, 43 have been put on a "category three" list, which means they will be assessed in January as potential candidates for closure.

Once this is completed, in March, those post offices definitely earmarked for closure will be named.

The Post Office has declared it wants to close around one-in-four category three branches to save hundreds of millions of pounds and, if that is replicated evenly throughout the country, something like ten communities in Mr Farron's constituency will end up without a post office.
