In this week in the Gazette - 100, 50 and 25 years ago:
100 YEARS AGO - 1920
THE first mail was made up at Penrith for the Tebay and Orton district. The district for several years has had to obtain its correspondence by the first morning slow train from the south. Now the bags are being brought to Penrith and dropped from the travelling post office and are sent back by the 7-10 up train. By this means, the delivery is begun three-quarters-of-an-hour earlier.
50 YEARS AGO - 1970
ALTHOUGH administering the breath test must be an unpleasant duty for the police, the system is producing results. An increase of 22 prosecutions for drinking and driving compared with 1968, 1969 was the first year during which the breathalyser was in operation for a full 12 months.
25 YEARS AGO - 1995
NEW police legislation has been introduced to help fight cross-border crime between England and Scotland. Under previous laws, if Cumbrian police were chasing a suspect who drove into Scotland, the policeman lost all his special rights and became, in effect, a member of the public.
