RESURFACING work on a major road in Kendal is set to cause road closures of at least three weeks.

Town councillor Adam Edwards, who lives on the Sandylands Estate, described the Sandylands Road facelift as “much-needed”.

“The speed bumps are very much worn out,” he said.

“There’s obviously potholes and the road itself is getting into a bit of a state.

“It’s a well-used road so it really did need to be worked on.”

The roadworks, which will be carried out Monday to Friday, are set to begin on February 17 and are programmed to last three weeks. However, a Cumbria County Council (CCC) spokesman said poor weather conditions could “lead to delays within the programme.”

He added “preparation works” would begin from 6pm every evening and a road closure would be operational between ‘approximately’ 6.30pm and 1am.

Cllr Edwards said: “I think the most disruption will be noise disruption rather than traffic disruption. But hopefully they’ll keep that to a minimum.”

County councillor Shirley Evans, who represents the Kendal Nether ward incorporating Sandylands said residents had “waited a long time to get this work done.”

She added: “I’m sure there’s going to be people who feel inconvenienced. I’m sure it’s going to be hard for some residents.

“But in the long run we are going to have a super new road surface.”

A CCC spokesman said the roadworks would be carried out in two phases “to assist with access in the area,” with drivers advised to avoid the road:

lPhase 1 - Appleby Road to Jenkin Rise (access available via Peat Lane).

lPhase 2 - East side of Jenkin Rise to Sedbergh Road (access available via Jenkin Rise).

The barriers on Sandgate will be temporarily removed during the works to assist with access on the south side of the estate.

The CCC spokesman said there would be traffic marshals on site and diversions signposted, with access for emergency vehicles maintained. He added HGV access would not be possible during the closure periods.
