100 YEARS AGO - 1920

A COMMITTEE, meeting in Kendal to dispose of a clerical appointment, had before them two candidates - one unmarried, the other a family man. The bachelor was chosen for the job. He was officially congratulated as ‘the happy man’. Sensibly blushing, he was about to utter his thanks, when a treble voice was heard: ‘well, all I hope is that the loser will be happy, though married!’.

50 YEARS AGO - 1970

MAIN roads throughout Westmorland were like battlefields as morning workers and long-distance lorries got to grips with the heaviest snowfall of the winter. The snow began to fall at 2am and, two hours later, Shap was blocked despite the efforts of the Westmorland County Council.

25 YEARS AGO - 1995

EXTREME wet weather has once more caused problems on the Settle to Carlisle railway line, only three weeks after the fatal crash there following a landslide. At Appleby, still drying out after the major floods some weeks ago, the River Eden burst its banks at the Sands once again. Eight homes, six shops and two petrol stations were flooded.
