A MOUNTAIN rescue team is among the charities to benefit from a £1 million grant.

Kirkby Stephen's volunteer organisation, which carries out lifesaving search and rescue work, will receive more than £3,900 for vital new equipment. It will be one of 50 rescue charities to benefit from this additional funding.

“We will use the funds to purchase two new inflatable rescue sleds," said Peter Miller of Kirkby Stephen's Mountain Rescue.

"One will be capable of holding four people and the other will be smaller for removing a casualty. These will be used for evacuations from properties. We are looking to take control of the crafts very shortly. There are just short of 30 volunteers in Kirkby Stephen. Extra equipment and bits for our team can be vital when the time comes. It’ll be a great addition to our assets and our capabilities in saving lives”.

Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, said: “Our rescue boat teams carry out vital work to keep our rivers, lakes and inshore areas safe."
