Libraries and archive centres are closing from today following latest government guidance on controlling coronavirus.
Cumbria County Council have said most of the buildings will be closed to the public, with a few shared locations remaining open if they offer other services, such as registrars offices.
The closure is expected to last until at least May 1.
A spokesman said: "This decision has not been taken lightly given the valuable service that our libraries and archives provide.
"However this is an unprecedented situation and the health, safety and wellbeing of our customers, staff and local communities has to be our number one priority.
"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and understanding."
Online services, including e-book and e-magazines, are still available at Cumbria.gov.uk/libraries.
A contactless home delivery service is also available to existing customers signed up for the service, and may be extended to others if enough staff and volunteers are available.
The council will also waive fines incurred during the temporary closure period, as customers won't be able to return books in most locations, but those who borrowed online books can renew their items.
The full list of the closures can be found online at Cumbria.gov.uk, or you can follow the latest information on the council's Facebook and Twitter pages.
During this difficult time we would like to take the opportunity to remind our customers that the We will be considering how we can enhance this offer over the coming weeks.
