In this week: what was happening in the Gazette 100, 50 and 25 years ago?
100 YEARS AGO - 1920
AN OUTBREAK of fire occurred in an oil house on the premises of the Falls paper mills, Beetham. An alarm was immediately raised and the workers who were on night shift assisted in the work of fighting the conflagration. The flames were kept in hand with fire extinguishers in the building. The incessant buzzing of the fire alarm brought many willing helpers from the village.
50 YEARS AGO - 1970
THERE is much to be alarmed about in the current road proposals for South Westmorland, says a statement issued by the Lake District Area Council of the Ramblers’ Association. The link road which is proposed to drive through the Yealands, Hazelslack and Crag Bank areas is considered to be a complete waste of money. It will enable traffic to arrive at Levens Bridge on roads built to motorway standard and an improved A590 should prove adequate for many years to come. The Kendal Link and the West of Kendal bypass are considered inevitable and no doubt essential.
25 YEARS AGO - 1995
OVER forties have now been branded as the bane of the lives of mountain rescue teams. After years of criticising youth parties on the fells, Langdale-Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team says youngsters have become less of a problem than the middle-aged.
